A Hot Wire Bottle works on the principles of thermal stress and expansion. When a glass bottle is subjected to a concentrated heat source along a defined line, the glass expands in a heated area. Upon rapid cooling of the heated line (usually with either water or cold air), thermal stress is generated between the heated and unheated portions of glass. 

As a result of this stress, once the heated line reaches the threshold of fracture, the glass will break /shatter with precision right down the heated line, providing a neat and deliberate separation of the glass without the bottle shattering.
