Tanzania's packaging and plastic film industry is growing fast—Dar es Salaam's port-driven export economy, Arusha's flexible packaging converters, and Mwanza's growing FMCG sector all depend on one thing that rarely gets talked about: how well a film slides. If a laminate or BOPP roll doesn't meet the correct slip properties, it jams on the packing line, tears during transit through the Dar–Zambia or Dar–DRC corridor, or fails a buyer's quality audit before it even leaves the warehouse. As a leading plastic film testing machine in Tanzania, Presto Instruments helps converters catch this before a laminate or BOPP roll ever reaches the packing line
That's where a coefficient of static friction tester in Tanzania earns its place on the QC floor for Tanzanian manufacturers and exporters who need results that satisfy both the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) and international buyers in the EU, the Middle East, and the COMESA region. Presto Instruments supplies precision COF testing equipment engineered for exactly this purpose.

Tanzania is one of East Africa's largest producers and importers of flexible packaging film—used across cement bagging, tea and coffee export packaging, edible oil pouches, and FMCG wrapping for the domestic and regional markets. All of these depend on films behaving predictably on high-speed packing lines and during long-haul transport to landlocked neighbors like Zambia, Malawi, the DRC, and Burundi.
If the coefficient of friction (COF) of a film is too low, packages slip and shift during stacking and transit—a serious risk on the long truck routes out of Dar es Salaam port. If the COF is too high, the material jams inside form-fill-seal machines, slowing production and increasing rejection rates. A COF tester machine removes the guesswork, giving converters and packaging exporters an exact numerical value for how a film will behave before it ever reaches the customer.
For manufacturers supplying regulated sectors — pharmaceuticals, food-grade packaging, and export-grade laminates — documented COF data is also becoming a standard requirement in buyer quality audits across the East African Community (EAC).
The Presto Coefficient of Static Friction Tester (Model PCOF-P3000) is a precision laboratory instrument built to measure the frictional resistance between two surfaces—most commonly a plastic film, laminate, or packaging substrate sliding against itself, glass, or metal. It captures two values on every run:

The Presto PCOF-P 3000 is engineered for precision at every stage of the test:
1. A test specimen is mounted flat on the instrument's horizontal testing table (steel or glass surface).
2. A second specimen is wrapped around a standard sled of specified weight.
3. The sled is drawn across the stationary specimen at a controlled speed of 150 ± 30 mm/min, connected via a low-friction pulley system to Presto's precision 1 kgf load cell.
4. The load cell continuously records the force required to initiate and maintain sled movement, displayed on the instrument's LED digital and graphical display.
5. The ratio of frictional force (F) to the normal load (N) applied by the sled's weight gives the coefficient of friction: µ = F / N
The maximum force that happens just before something starts moving gives the coefficient of friction; the average force that stays the same while it is moving gives the kinetic coefficient of friction. Both numbers are important—the static number tells how something will start moving on a packing line while the kinetic number tells how the film works once it is moving through rollers and guides.
Tanzania's national standards body, the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS), regulates the quality of packaging and plastic products sold or exported from Tanzania, including plastic films used for lamination and packaging. As an active ISO member working through the East African Community (EAC) and ARSO, TBS builds its technical requirements around internationally recognized test methods rather than a separate local friction-testing protocol.
That's exactly why the Presto Coefficient of Friction Tester (Model PCOF-P 3000) is engineered to ASTM D1894 and ISO 8295 from the ground up. These are the two standards Tanzanian laboratories can rely on for both domestic compliance and international acceptance:
Because the Presto tester is built to these exact protocols, a single test report generated on the instrument can satisfy both a TBS pre-export inspection and the technical dossiers demanded by overseas buyers in the EU, GCC, and COMESA markets—no duplicate testing, no re-certification.

Q. What does a coefficient of friction tester measure?
Ans: This thing measures the force it takes to get two things sliding against each other and the force it takes to keep them sliding. We are talking about the coefficient of friction and the kinetic coefficient of friction. These two things are measured between two surfaces, like plastic films or laminates or even paper or packaging materials.
Q. What is the price of a coefficient of friction tester in Tanzania?
Ans: The price of something is based on what kind of model you get. It can be digital or computerized, or it can be used with a coefficient of friction tester. The price also depends on how automated it is and what kind of reports it can make. If you want to know the price for sure, you should get in touch with Presto Instruments. They can give you a price quote that's just for your lab, based on how much testing you do and what you need to meet the standards.
Q. Can this instrument test both plastic films and paper materials?
Ans: The Presto COF tester is a useful tool. It helps us test lots of materials like plastic films and laminates. We can also use the Presto COF tester to test paper and paperboard. It works with coated fabrics and packaging substrates too. The Presto COF tester uses a method to do all these tests. It has a sled and a load cell that work together to get the job done.
Q. Does Presto provide calibration certificates for Tanzanian regulatory compliance?
Ans: Yes, we do offer calibration that meets the standards set by ISO. This comes with a certificate that can be traced back to NABL. We support checks before goods are exported, which is known as TBS-export verification, and we also support audits from buyers in other countries. Our calibration supports both of these things so international buyers can verify that our products meet their standards.
