Overview

An Izod tester is a laboratory instrument used to measure the impact resistance or toughness of materials, including primarily plastics and metals. A specimen is struck by a pendulum hammer, and the amount of energy absorbed by the specimen is measured, all in accordance with an established test method.

In the test, a notched specimen is oriented vertically and impacted by a known energy on a pendulum that is suspended directly above the specimen, and the strength of the impact is accurately derived from the energy absorbed by the notched specimen, which is directly observed by a loss of kinetic energy of the pendulum. The results of this testing, therefore, are a vital measure of quality control, material selection, and product development in industry.

How Does an Izod Tester Work?

An Izod impact tester operates by swinging a pendulum of a certain mass and height to strike a vertically clamped notched specimen and break it. The energy absorbed by the specimen is determined by measuring the difference between the pendulum's initial potential energy relative to its residual kinetic energy as it swings past the specimen. The resulting energy absorption value, or impact strength, gives a measure of the material's resistance to impact.
