What is Paper Stiffness?
The term paper stiffness refers to the resistance of the material against bending or deformation when a force is applied. It is a property used to evaluate the capability of a paper in its resistance to physical stress, especially the shape that it holds.
The Presto’s stiffness tester is a device of great precision, providing accurate and reproducible tests of the stiffness of paper. This device provides consistent data that is unchanging and is used by manufacturers as well as control teams to assess properties so that such paper items meet specifications in compliance with industry criteria.

Step-by-Step Guide to Operating the Stiffness Tester
Step 1: Prepare the Sample Paper
Prepare a standard paper sample that would meet the size requirements specified by the tester. Paper to be used in testing should be flat, clean, and wrinkle-free and should not be damaged. It is generally standardized in terms of sample size, say 100 mm x 100 mm, for repetition of tests.
Step 2: Set Up the Tester
Calibrate the stiffness tester first. Make sure the machine can be set according to the paper thickness and the weight being tested. In some equipment, one can also pick test parameters, for instance, the angle of testing or even the speed of load. Choose the setting according to specifications by industry or by requirements specified for that paper.
Step 3: Position the Paper Sample on the Tester
Place the paper sample prepared on the support plate. Make sure that the paper is properly centered to avoid skewed measurements. Misplacement or misalignment can result in inaccurate test results.
Step 4: Run the Test
Start by loading the paper with a known load. The stiffness tester will measure the bending resistance and record the amount of force required to bend the sample a known distance. This is all recorded by the sensors in the machine.
Step 5: Record the Results
Once the test is done, the stiffness value will be shown by the tester. The result will be measured in units of millinewtons or bending stiffness units. Mark down the value for analysis or comparison with industry or customer specifications.
Step 6: Data Analysis
Analyze the recorded data against corresponding standards. If the recorded stiffness values fall outside this acceptable range, changes might be made to the production process by adjusting the amount of fiber composition, method of sheet formation, and drying process to attain the desired stiffness.
FAQs
1. How frequently does the stiffness tester require calibration?
Calibrate every month or before every batch of testing in high-precision industries.
2. Does the stiffness tester work for any kind of paper?
Yes, it is possible to use the stiffness tester on various types of paper, however, settings like load range and measurement parameters have to be altered.
3. How does paper stiffness affect product packaging?
Packaging paper with higher stiffness will ensure more strength that avoids damage during transport.
